Working with CGI

Anyways, here's a pic of me working in Autodesk Maya Live.

It would take me forever to explain what is going on in this screen, so let me just say that what I am doing involves tons of 3d tracking/solving and tons of CGI. Basically, I'm taking stock footage and creating a 3d map in which I can render models/animations and composite them seamlessly into the shot. This is EXACTLY how CGI is done in the movies you watch.

At the next LAN, I'll explain the entire process and what it all means.

  • Ducktape, you might have some idea as to what this is.

  • I do, but barely. I see your using the x things as way to mark your position so it can be translated from the picture to 3d, but thats it.

  • Hey matt,

How did you get the "Live" drop down menu choice? For me it's not an option (i have 8.5)

  • You have to go into Plug-In Manager and turn on "MayaLive."

You also have to have the unlimited version of Maya. I've got Maya 8 Unlimited.

  • Sometimes I wish I went to your school.

  • Why? My school doesn't teach us this stuff...

Everything that I know involving film and 3D are all self-learned.

  • Matt, remember to bring the camera tomorrow

  • I asked my parents if they would take me over to the station to pick up a camera, and they freaked out about it.

They think these cameras are fragile pieces of equipment, yet I tried to persuade them otherwise. These cameras are rock solid. I once dropped one off my dirtbike and into the sand at 30MPH and nothing happened.

I guess we'll have to make do with my suck little HandyCam, unless you can get your parents to get a camera at teh BATV.

I'm really not sure if we should film this at all without a PD-150 (BATV camera) because my little camera has no such lens and CCDs as the PD-150. We'd be getting a wicked suck image with anything otherwise...

  • So see if your parents can get one!
